M3U vs Xtream login: what's the difference?
By the IBOB Player team · Published · Updated
If you set up a media player, you will meet two terms: M3U and Xtream. They are two ways a provider can hand you the same kind of thing, a list of streams your player can open. This guide explains the difference in plain terms.
IBOB Player is a media player only. It does not provide channels or playlists. Use playlists from sources you are legally entitled to use.
What is an M3U playlist?
M3U is a simple, long-established text format for a list of media entries. Each entry has a name and an address. A provider can give you:
- a link (URL) that returns the playlist, often ending in
.m3uor.m3u8; or - a file you download and load yourself.
Because it is just a list, a player reads the whole file and shows what is in it.
What is an Xtream-style login?
Instead of one link, you receive three values: server URL, username and password. The player uses them to ask the server for the available categories and entries, and can often fetch extras such as programme guide information when the server offers it. In practice you type three fields once rather than pasting one long link.
How to tell which one you have
| You were given | Type |
|---|---|
One link or file ending in .m3u / .m3u8 |
M3U |
| Server URL + username + password | Xtream-style login |
Some providers supply both for the same account. Either works if the player supports it.
Which should you use?
- Use what your provider supports and recommends.
- If you have both, try the Xtream-style login first when you want the player to browse by categories, and fall back to the M3U link if anything fails to load. Behaviour can vary by provider.
- Keep your link or login private: anyone who has it can use your account.
Adding either in IBOB Player
IBOB Player supports both formats and up to five playlists at once. Follow the playlist setup guide, or start with your device: Android TV or Fire TV Stick.
Frequently asked questions
Is Xtream better than M3U?
Neither is better in general. An M3U link is a single playlist address; an Xtream-style login is a server URL plus username and password, which lets the player request lists, categories and guide data from the server. Which you use depends on what your provider gives you.
Can I use both in the same player?
In IBOB Player, yes: it supports M3U and Xtream playlists and up to five playlists at once.
